It is used both as an ornamental vine and as a fruit crop - the Pitaya or Dragonfruit.



Grows as a sprawling cactus with stems up to 2 metres long.



The large white flowers are followed by the edible wine coloured fruits that are 10cm long. They have a white spongy pulp with small black seeds and thick skin. They are considered about the best cactus fruits.
