Dianthus is readily started from seed. The seeds are thin and brittle around the edges and should be handled gently to avoid damage. Prepare a planting medium of three parts potting soil, one part horticultural sand, one part peat moss and two parts organic compost. Mix well. Fill starter trays with the potting mix. Moisten the mix, then sprinkle seeds on the surface, cover lightly with some of the soil (1/8 inch), mist with water, place is a sunny location and keep moist until the seeds have germinated.
